Join the world’s greatest explorers playing Himalayas: Roof of the World

Discover tucked-away Tibetan monasteries, catch glimpses of wild tigers roaming the snow-capped mountains and set up camp beneath the stars – it’s all possible in Himalayas: Roof of the World. This new online slot game from Barcrest lets gamers explore some of the highest peaks of the Himalayas whilst playing on their laptop, tablet or smartphone.

And what better way to celebrate a slot game all about an epic mountain expedition than taking time to recount a few of history’s most famous adventure seekers. From the Royal Navy captain who mapped the South Pacific to the first European to step foot on American soil, here are a few of the greatest explorers of all time. . .

Marco Polo (1254 – 1324)

Marco Polo was a Venetian adventurer who embarked on a voyage from Europe to Asia. He was just 17 years old when he set sail with his father and uncle in 1271. It took them 4 years to finally reach China, where Polo stayed for 17 years working as an aide to Kublai Khan. He wrote extensively about his exploration of Asia in his book The Travels of Marco Polo. The text was printed in French, Italian and Latin and, for hundreds of years, remained the only European source of information on China.

Christopher Columbus (1451 – 1506)

Italian explorer Christopher Columbus embarked of the first of 4 famous voyages across the Atlantic with 3 ships: the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. Initially, Columbus has hoped the trip would lead to the discovery of a shortcut between Europe and Asia. It was not yet known that continents besides Europe, Asia and Africa existed. But after crossing the Atlantic, Columbus pulled up on the shores of the Bahamas – the first European to do so. When the Spanish learned that he has discovered a New World, many voyagers decided to follow in Columbus’ footsteps, which eventually led to the European colonisation of the Americas.

James Cook (1728 – 1779)

Captain James Cook was a British explorer who famously mapped the South Pacific. After joining the Royal Navy in 1755 and serving in the Seven Years’ War, Cook’s courage, surveying and navigational skills quickly caught the attention of the Royal Navy’s Admiralty. He was therefore commissioned to command the first of 3 voyages across unchartered seas. The journey was tough and physically demanding, but allowed him to map the lands from New Zealand to Hawaii. Cook recorded islands and coastlines never previously documented on European maps. His findings continued to have influence in the fields of geography and science even centuries after his death.

Neil Armstrong (1930 –2012)

In 1969, Neil Armstrong took space exploration to new heights by being the first human in history to walk on the moon. The American astronaut boarded the Apollo 11 spaceflight alongside Michael Collins and Buzz Aldridge. And after descending the ladder of the Lunar Module Eagle, Armstrong stepped onto the moon before 600 million excited viewers back on earth. He declared it to be ‘one small step for man, on giant leap for mankind.’

If the tales of Polo, Columbus, Cook and Armstrong have got you ready for adventure, maybe it’s time you embarked on an exploration of the world-famous mountain range in Himalayas: Roof of the World.
